What’s inside
Full disclosure
Taurine 500 mg is a single-ingredient supplement containing 500 mg of taurine per capsule. Taurine is an amino acid your body uses in many ways — it helps with heart function, vision, immune balance, and nerve signaling.
It occurs naturally in animal foods and is synthesized by your own body, but supplemental doses can exceed what you'd normally get from food. The capsule itself is made from hypromellose, a plant-based capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for taurine is limited. For hepatitis and congestive heart failure (CHF, a condition where the heart can't pump blood efficiently), it's rated possibly effective — meaning some studies suggest benefit, but the evidence isn't yet strong or consistent enough to be certain.
For obesity, the rating is possibly ineffective, so evidence doesn't currently support using it for weight loss. We hold no effectiveness data for other conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated in typical doses for up to one year. The most common side effects reported in studies are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Serious adverse effects are rare. A small number of case reports describe allergic reactions in people sensitive to sulfur-containing compounds, and one case describes mania symptoms in someone who consumed multiple energy drinks containing taurine and other ingredients over several days — though it's unclear whether taurine itself caused that or another ingredient did.
Long-term safety beyond one year is less certain. The safety data on supplement doses is not robust, so if you plan to use taurine regularly, do so only under medical guidance.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, taurine is rated likely safe — it occurs naturally in breast milk — but supplement safety in these periods has not been well studied. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether supplemental taurine makes sense for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Taurine 500 mg if you take antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) — taurine may lower blood pressure further and raise the risk of dizziness or fainting. Also check if you take lithium for bipolar disorder or depression, since taurine may increase lithium levels in your body.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may be worth considering if you have hepatitis or heart failure and your doctor agrees it could help — but the evidence is still preliminary. If you take blood pressure medications or lithium, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first, because this product can interact with both.
For most other uses, we don't have solid evidence it works.

Taurine 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Taurine 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com does interact with certain medications.
Through its taurine content, this product may affect blood pressure medications and lithium — the most serious concern is a Moderate-severity interaction with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), where taurine might lower blood pressure further and raise the risk of excessively low blood pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine may also interact at Moderate severity with lithium. Because taurine has diuretic properties (it may increase urine output), it might reduce how your kidneys clear lithium from your body, potentially raising lithium levels to unsafe ranges.
This is particularly important if you take lithium for bipolar disorder or depression — your dose and blood levels need careful monitoring.
Additionally, the exact risk depends on your dose, how long you take it, and your individual health. Use the medication checker below to run through your specific prescriptions before you start.
