Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Tongkat Ali Root Extract at a 200:1 concentration, delivering 1,200 mg per capsule. Tongkat Ali (also called Eurycoma longifolia) is a traditional Southeast Asian herb used mainly for sexual health and male vitality.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Eurycoma Longifolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Eurycoma Longifolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Sexual desire — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence supports Tongkat Ali for sexual desire, where it's rated Possibly Effective based on available research. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's Possibly Ineffective.

The evidence on back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes is too weak or limited for us to rate it one way or the other — so we simply don't have enough reliable data yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tongkat Ali is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but we don't have solid long-term safety data or consistent information about product quality across brands. The bigger concern is hormonal: the herb appears to increase testosterone levels, and if levels climb above the normal range, you could develop testosterone-related side effects including acne, insulin resistance, and liver stress.

Because of this and insufficient safety data, avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you're on propranolol (Inderal) or any other blood-pressure or heart medication — Tongkat Ali can weaken propranolol's effect. Also double-check any drug that depends on CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 enzymes to be cleared, and let us know if you're taking testosterone replacement or have low testosterone.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Tongkat Ali 200:1 1200 mg by eXplicit Supplements: Common Questions

Does Tongkat Ali 200:1 1200 mg by eXplicit Supplements interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tongkat Ali 200:1 1200 mg has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tongkat Ali 200:1 1200 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will Tongkat Ali actually improve my sexual desire?
The evidence suggests it possibly can — that's our rating based on available research. Results vary from person to person, and you'd need to try it to know if it works for you.
Is it safe to take long-term?
We don't have solid safety data for long-term use, so that's one reason to talk with your pharmacist before committing to it. Short-term studies show it's generally tolerated, but we need more information on extended use.
Can I take it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety data, and the herb's possible hormonal effects mean it's best to avoid it during pregnancy. Avoid it while breastfeeding as well until we know more.
What are the side effects of higher testosterone?
If Tongkat Ali pushes your testosterone above normal range, you might see acne, insulin resistance, or liver stress. That's why it matters to know your baseline and monitor how you feel.
Does Tongkat Ali help with athletic performance?
The evidence suggests it's probably not effective for that purpose, so there's no strong reason to use it specifically to boost your workouts.
