What’s inside
Full disclosure
Uva Ursi by Nutricost contains one active ingredient: uva ursi leaf extract. This is a plant-based ingredient traditionally used for urinary tract support.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — hypromellose, rice flour, and magnesium stearate — that help hold the capsule together and allow it to break down in your stomach.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
For urinary tract infections (UTIs), uva ursi is rated possibly ineffective, meaning the evidence we hold doesn't support its use for this purpose. For bronchitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
If you're considering uva ursi for any of these, talk with your doctor about what the current evidence shows and whether other options might be better for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Uva ursi is generally well tolerated at low doses when used short-term. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset, and vomiting.
At very high doses (20 grams or more of dried herb), serious effects like convulsions, delirium, and shortness of breath have been reported, and doses of 30 grams or more may be fatal; however, typical supplement doses are much lower. Uva ursi should be avoided during pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus and lacks safety data.
It should also be avoided while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety information. Because prolonged use can be toxic, this supplement is meant for short-term use only.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Uva Ursi, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on lithium (a Moderate interaction), drugs processed by liver enzymes CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 (Moderate), medications metabolized through glucuronidation (Moderate), urinary acidifying agents (Moderate), or any drug transported by P-glycoprotein (Minor). These are the main drug types documented to interact with uva ursi.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Uva ursi may be considered for short-term urinary tract support, though evidence for UTIs is limited. You should be careful if you take lithium, drugs processed by your liver's CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 enzymes, or medications that change your urine's acidity — and avoid it entirely if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're on any medications.

Uva Ursi by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Uva Ursi by Nutricost does interact with medications.
Its main active ingredient, uva ursi leaf extract, can slow how your body breaks down a number of drugs — chiefly those processed by two liver enzymes (CYP2C19 and CYP3A4) and those cleared from your body through a process called glucuronidation. The most serious documented concern is a Moderate interaction with lithium (used for mood disorders), where uva ursi's diuretic properties may increase lithium levels in your bloodstream and require a dose adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Uva ursi also carries Moderate interactions with drugs that acidify your urine — these medications may reduce uva ursi's intended effects in the urinary tract. Additionally, it theoretically affects P-glycoprotein substrates (a Minor interaction), though this effect hasn't been seen in humans.
Altogether, these interactions span 804 individual medications.
Because many of these interactions have only been observed in lab studies and not yet reported in real people, the actual risk in your case depends on what you're taking. Before you start uva ursi, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page or talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take lithium, blood-pressure drugs, heart medications, or anything that needs to work in acidic or alkaline urine.

Uva Ursi Leaf Extract
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit cytochrome CYP2C19. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, uva ursi may increase levels of drugs metabolized by glucuronidation.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Lithium
Theoretically, uva ursi may increase lithium levels, necessitating a decrease in dose.
Uva ursi may have diuretic properties. Diuretics may increase lithium reabsorption with sodium in the proximal tubule of the kidney. Theoretically, uva ursi might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Urinary Acidifying Agents
Effects of uva ursi in the urinary tract may be reduced by urinary acidifying agents.
Uva ursi seems to work best in alkaline urine. Theoretically, taking uva ursi with medications known to acidify the urine may decrease any effects of uva ursi on the urinary tract.
P-Glycoprotein Substrates
Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.
