Axitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Inlyta (axitinib): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this cancer medicine out of your system. In lab dish testing, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, axitinib could build up to higher levels than intended, which may mean more of its typical side effects, things like high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, mouth sores, or hand and foot soreness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube studies, and it hasn't been shown in people. Still, axitinib is a serious medication, so please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding uva ursi.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Axitinib Used For?

Brand name: Inlyta

Axitinib (brand name Inlyta) is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a type of kidney cancer. Inlyta can be used as a first-line treatment — meaning the very first treatment you receive — when combined with either avelumab or pembrolizumab, two other cancer medicines.

Inlyta is also approved as a single agent (on its own) for patients with advanced RCC who have already tried one other systemic (body-wide) cancer therapy that did not work or stopped working.
