Omacetaxine Mepesuccinate falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version for anyone on omacetaxine (Synribo). This leukemia drug is moved around by a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, and lab studies suggest uva ursi might slow that pump down. In a test tube, blocking it could let a little more drug stay in the body, which in theory might mean more of the usual side effects you'd watch for with omacetaxine, like low blood counts, fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding, infections, nausea, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest, though: this has only been seen in lab dishes, never confirmed in real people, and the database rates it as minor. So it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Since omacetaxine is a serious cancer medicine, please run any uva ursi or herbal product past your oncologist or pharmacist before using it.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. What Is Omacetaxine Injection Used For?

  • Omacetaxine injection is used to treat adults with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have already been treated with at least two other medications for CML and can no longer benefit from these medications or cannot take these medications due to side effects. Omacetaxine injection is in a class of medications called protein synthesis inhibitors. It works by slowing the growth of cancer cells.
