Ciclesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your Alvesco or Omnaris. Ciclesonide is actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to switch it on, and one of the cleanup enzymes involved is called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, uva ursi seems to slow that same enzyme down a little. If that happened in a real person, slightly more active drug could hang around, which might mean a touch more of the usual corticosteroid effects (think throat irritation, hoarseness, or oral thrush, especially if you skip rinsing your mouth after the inhaler).

The honest truth, though, is that this is only a test-tube finding and has never been shown in people, so the real-world risk looks small. Still, since uva ursi can stress the liver, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Ciclesonide Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Omnaris, Alvesco, Zetonna

Alvesco (ciclesonide) inhaler is approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma as a preventive therapy in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is taken regularly to reduce airway inflammation and help prevent asthma symptoms — not to relieve a sudden attack.

Alvesco is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat sudden wheezing or acute asthma episodes. It is also not approved for children under 12.
