Doxycycline falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for pairing uva ursi with doxycycline. Uva ursi has been shown in lab dish studies to block a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs (including doxycycline) in and out of cells. In theory, slowing that pump could let a little more doxycycline build up in your system, which might mean a touch more of the usual side effects like nausea, an upset stomach, or sun sensitivity.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This was only seen in a test tube, never in actual people, and it's rated a minor interaction. Doxycycline is an active antibiotic, not a prodrug, so there's no flip in direction to worry about. For most folks this isn't a real concern, but since uva ursi is best used only short-term anyway, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
