Uva Ursi and Opicapone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Opicapone

Opicapone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may alter the levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with uva ursi and opicapone (Ongentys). Opicapone is carried around the body in part by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a pump moving the drug in and out of cells. In test-tube studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that pump down a little. If that happened in people, slightly more opicapone could hang around, which in theory might nudge up Parkinson's-related effects like dizziness, low blood pressure on standing, or extra involuntary movements (dyskinesia).

The honest truth is this is theoretical only, seen in lab dishes and never reported in actual patients, so it's rated minor. Still, since both can affect your system, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you use uva ursi at full supplement strength.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

About Uva Ursi

What is Uva Ursi?

Uva Ursi
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Urinary discomfort
  • Mild diuretic
  • Kidney stones
  • Skin conditions

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Opicapone

What Is Opicapone Used For?

Brand name: Ongentys

Ongentys (opicapone) is used alongside levodopa/carbidopa to treat Parkinson's disease in adults who experience 'off' episodes — periods when medication wears off and Parkinson's symptoms return before the next dose is due.

It is not used alone. Ongentys works as an add-on to help levodopa stay active longer, reducing the time patients spend in these 'off' states.
