Oxybutynin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version on combining uva ursi with oxybutynin. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear oxybutynin out of your system. In lab (test tube) studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, oxybutynin could build up a bit and its usual side effects might feel stronger, things like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or feeling overheated.

The important thing to know is that this has only been seen in lab dishes, not in actual patients, so it's theoretical. Still, since uva ursi is meant only for short-term use and can stress the liver, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, especially if you already notice strong anticholinergic side effects.

Effects of uva ursi in the urinary tract may be reduced by urinary acidifying agents.
Uva ursi seems to work best in alkaline urine. Theoretically, taking uva ursi with medications known to acidify the urine may decrease any effects of uva ursi on the urinary tract.

Here's the gist of this one: uva ursi works best when your urine is on the alkaline side. The germ-fighting compound it produces (hydroquinone) is most active in non-acidic urine. So the concern on file is about anything that acidifies your urine making uva ursi less effective, not the other way around.

Now, about oxybutynin specifically. It's a bladder relaxer for overactive bladder, and honestly it isn't a classic urine-acidifying drug, so I'd consider this interaction pretty weak and mostly theoretical for this combo. Oxybutynin won't lose its own effect here, and you won't see new side effects (like dry mouth, constipation, or blurry vision) from mixing them. The only real question is whether uva ursi pulls its weight. Since uva ursi can stress the liver and should only be used short-term, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Oxybutynin

What Is Oxybutynin Used For?

Brand names: Ditropan, Ditropan XL, Oxybutynin, Oxytrol, Anturol, Gelnique

Oxybutynin treats overactive bladder — including the sudden urge to urinate, leaking before you can reach the bathroom (urge incontinence), and going too frequently. Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) and immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are used for these symptoms. Oxytrol is approved for overactive bladder in men; Oxytrol for Women is approved for overactive bladder in women aged 18 and older.

Extended-release tablets (Oxybutynin Chloride) are also approved for children 6 years and older who have bladder overactivity caused by a neurological condition, such as spina bifida. Immediate-release tablets and oral solution (Oxybutynin Chloride) are indicated for bladder instability symptoms — including urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, and painful urination — in patients with neurogenic bladder conditions.
