Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Phenytoin
Phenytoin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit cytochrome CYP2C19. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body clears phenytoin partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. In lab dish studies, uva ursi seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, phenytoin could clear a little slower and build up in the blood, which might nudge you toward side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, slurred speech, clumsy movements, or jumpy eye movements.
I want to be honest with you though, this is only a test-tube finding and has never been shown to happen in people. Still, phenytoin is a narrow-window drug, so even small swings matter. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding uva ursi.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenytoin page
“Phenytoin (Dilantin) is a seizure medicine with a narrow therapeutic index, meaning small changes in its blood level can bring seizures back or tip over into toxicity, so I treat its supplement list with real seriousness. About Uva Ursi
What is Uva Ursi?
- Urinary tract infections
- Urinary discomfort
- Mild diuretic
- Kidney stones
- Skin conditions
Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
