These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Uva Ursi interacts with whole categories of medication. Morphine Sulfate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Uva Ursi in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Morphine Sulfate
Morphine Sulfate falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body clears morphine mainly through a process called glucuronidation. In a lab dish, uva ursi blocked one of those clearing enzymes (UGT1A1), and the worry is that if morphine is cleared more slowly, it could build up. With morphine, more buildup can mean stronger effects like deep drowsiness, confusion, constipation, and in serious cases slowed breathing.
That said, I want to be honest about how weak this signal is. This was only seen in a test tube, it did not show up in animal studies, and it has never been reported in actual people. So this is more theoretical than proven. Still, morphine is a powerful drug, so please run the combination by your pharmacist or doctor before using uva ursi.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Morphine Sulfate also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.
In vitro, uva ursi appears to inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist of it: morphine is moved around your body partly by a transporter protein called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a little pump. In a lab dish, uva ursi seems to slow that pump down. If that same thing happened in people, slightly more morphine could stay in your system, which in theory might nudge up its effects (think more drowsiness, constipation, or slower breathing).
But I want to be straight with you: this is only seen in test-tube and animal studies, never shown in actual humans, and it's rated a minor concern. Morphine is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped around. Still, since morphine is powerful, mention any uva ursi use to your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Morphine Sulfate page
“With morphine sulfate (MS Contin, Kadian, Avinza), an opioid powerful enough to slow breathing on its own, this list warrants genuine respect. Of the 172 supplements and foods on file, 8 carry a major rating, and most of those pile extra sedation onto a drug that already sedates.”

About Uva Ursi
What is Uva Ursi?
- Urinary tract infections
- Urinary discomfort
- Mild diuretic
- Kidney stones
- Skin conditions
Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Morphine
What Is Morphine Used For?
Brand names: MS Contin, Kadian, Avinza, Morphabond, Arymo ER
Morphine is used to manage acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) pain that is severe enough to need an opioid and that hasn't been adequately treated by other options. The higher-concentration liquid form is reserved for adults who are already opioid-tolerant — meaning their body is used to opioid medications.
Because of real risks of addiction, misuse, and overdose, morphine is only prescribed when other pain treatments have not worked or are not expected to work. It is not intended for long-term use unless the pain continues to be severe and no alternatives are suitable.
