HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Wheat Grass & Barley Grass Mint Flavor by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: wheat grass glycerite liquid extract and barley grass glycerite liquid extract. Both are plant extracts prepared in a glycerin base — glycerin acts as a preservative and extraction medium.
The formula is mint-flavored for taste, and these inactive ingredients are the only other components listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for wheatgrass is insufficient for the conditions on file — that includes bronchitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), beta-thalassemia, cancer, and common cold. Barley grass, on the other hand, is rated likely effective for lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease, which is the one area where this product has established support in the research we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. However, wheat and barley are major food allergens in the United States, so allergic reactions can occur — watch for reactions, anorexia (loss of appetite), nausea, and constipation with wheatgrass, and abdominal bloating, flatulence, and unpleasant taste with barley.
Barley contains gluten, which matters if you're sensitive or celiac. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data on concentrated barley grass supplements to know either way; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Wheatgrass has no pregnancy or breastfeeding safety information on file. Quality and contamination concerns with raw grass products mean you should also check with your doctor before starting unless they've already approved it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check these before starting: antidiabetes drugs (blood glucose and hypoglycemia risk), CYP1A2 substrates (drugs your liver breaks down using a specific enzyme — many common ones fall here), and triclabendazole (Egaten) if you take it for parasitic infection. Use the medication checker on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for cholesterol or heart health support, barley grass has solid evidence behind it. But wheatgrass evidence is thin across the board.
Before you start, especially if you take diabetes medications or are pregnant or breastfeeding, run your medications and health situation past your pharmacist — this product can lower blood glucose and interact with how your liver processes certain drugs.

Wheat Grass & Barley Grass Mint Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita's Wheat Grass & Barley Grass Mint Flavor contains two active grass extracts, and together they interact with medications across several categories.
The most serious concern is wheatgrass with antidiabetes drugs — it may lower blood glucose levels and increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) because animal research shows wheatgrass stimulates insulin release.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Wheatgrass also affects a group of liver enzymes called CYP1A2 substrates (Moderate severity) — it may decrease how well certain medications work by speeding up how your body breaks them down. Barley grass, meanwhile, theoretically reduces the effectiveness of triclabendazole (Egaten), an antiparasitic medication used for liver fluke infections, though this effect has only been shown in animal studies so far.
Altogether, these interactions span 271 individual medications. Because wheatgrass and barley grass can affect how your body processes drugs and manage blood glucose, you'll want to check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start.
