Wild Cherry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wild Cherry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a liquid extract of wild cherry bark from Prunus serotina. The extract is prepared in a base of distilled water, certified organic cane alcohol, and certified organic vegetable glycerin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We hold no effectiveness data for wild cherry in our monograph. The evidence for what this extract does isn't established in the information we have on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild cherry is generally considered safe in the small amounts found in commercial cough products, but the plant contains compounds that can form cyanide when digested. Large amounts are a real concern — a documented case involved a woman who consumed about 300 grams of wild cherries steeped in alcohol and developed severe poisoning with headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and breathing trouble; she became comatose before recovering.
Because of the cyanide risk and insufficient safety data, the safety information on file advises against use while breastfeeding. There is no pregnancy/lactation safety information held for this ingredient.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, check whether you take any medications metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — a category that includes cholesterol drugs, antifungals, and many others (633 medications total). Wild cherry may slow how your liver clears these drugs, potentially raising their blood levels.
Ask your pharmacist to confirm your specific medications are not affected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wild cherry liquid might be worth considering if you're looking for a traditional herbal cough remedy in small amounts, but it's not something to take in large doses. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take any medications metabolized by your liver, talk to your pharmacist first.
The cyanide compounds in the plant are a real concern at higher intakes.

Wild Cherry by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Wild Cherry is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with a significant category of medications.
The main concern is with drugs processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (cytochrome P450 3A4 substrates) — in lab studies, wild cherry can slow how your liver clears these drugs, potentially raising their levels in your blood. In theory this could make them work stronger or cause side effects, but this interaction hasn't yet been reported in actual patients.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Drugs affected by CYP3A4 include cholesterol medications like lovastatin, antifungals like ketoconazole and itraconazole, and many others. The interaction is rated Moderate.
Altogether, these interactions span 633 individual medications.
Because this is based on lab evidence rather than real-world cases, the actual risk in people is still unclear. That said, if you take any prescription medication metabolized by CYP3A4, run it through the medication checker below before starting this product.

Wild Cherry bark (Prunus serotina) extract
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
