Cinnamon Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Cinnamon against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Cinnamon by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a straightforward single-ingredient product: cinnamon bark extract — the active ingredient. It's a liquid made with cane alcohol, distilled water, and glycerin, which help deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on cinnamon doesn't establish whether it works for amenorrhea, angina, common cold, diabetes, diarrhea, or dyslipidemia (high cholesterol). The data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of those uses.
If you're considering cinnamon for one of these, chat with your pharmacist or doctor about whether the clinical evidence supports trying it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Cinnamon is generally well tolerated in food amounts. At supplement doses — especially high ones taken long-term — there's a caution about coumarin, which the liver metabolizes and, in very large amounts, can harm over time.
In clinical trials, doses of 360 mg to 12 grams daily for 3 months didn't significantly raise liver enzymes, but the safety data advises against medicinal or high-dose supplement amounts during pregnancy. Breastfeeding safety data isn't on file.
A very small number of trial participants reported a rash or, in one case, a hypoglycemic seizure, though the seizure was reported just a day after starting and may not have been caused by the product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check any medications that harm the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) and any diabetes or blood sugar medications. Cinnamon may add to liver stress with long-term high doses and may lower blood glucose, potentially requiring dose changes.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Cinnamon liquid extract may be worth considering if you're looking for a culinary herb in supplement form, but evidence for specific health uses isn't established in our data. If you take diabetes medications or drugs that stress the liver, check your exact prescriptions with the interaction tool first — dose adjustments might be needed.

Cinnamon by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm Cinnamon is a single-ingredient liquid extract of cinnamon bark.
It can interact with two major drug categories we need to flag.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The biggest concern is hepatotoxic drugs — medications that stress the liver. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which in large amounts over time may add to that burden and theoretically increase liver damage risk.
The concern is mainly with supplement-level doses taken long-term; food amounts are generally fine.
Second, if you take diabetes medications (blood sugar drugs), cinnamon may lower your glucose levels as well, which means your dose might need adjusting to avoid low blood sugar. Again, this is a Moderate-level concern in theory based on how cinnamon works.
Alternative hepatotoxic agents and antidiabetes medications span 425 individual medications altogether. Run your exact prescriptions through the checker below before you start, especially if you're on liver-protective monitoring or insulin.

Cinnamon Bark Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
