Yarrow is generally well tolerated by mouth and when applied to the skin in short-term use, though human safety data are limited overall. Allergic reactions can occur, and some people develop dermatitis (skin irritation) or hives when it touches their skin, especially due to compounds called sesquiterpene lactones.

Topical application can also cause sun-sensitivity reactions in some people. Avoid yarrow in pregnancy — it's traditionally been avoided because it may affect the uterus.

Lithium

Theoretically, taking yarrow with lithium might increase the levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research shows that yarrow has diuretic activity. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, yarrow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
