Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Bamboo product and its label doesn't state a use — see Bamboo's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The data we hold doesn't establish that bamboo extract is effective for dental cavities — the evidence rating is insufficient. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research so far isn't strong enough to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bamboo shoots are eaten cooked in many cuisines, but supplement safety isn't well studied. Raw shoots can be toxic because they contain cyanide glycosides — though properly processed bamboo eliminates this risk through cooking, fermentation, or steam drying.

The safety data on bamboo supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding is too thin to know either way. Because this is a concentrated extract form, the safety notes advise against it during pregnancy and caution against it while breastfeeding unless your doctor has cleared it.

Topically, bamboo shoots have rarely caused contact dermatitis in individuals.

Antithyroid Drugs

Theoretically, long-term bamboo use might increase the effects and adverse effects of antithyroid drugs, possibly leading to hypothyroidism.
Animal research suggests that long-term consumption of bamboo shoot can decrease thyroid peroxidase activity, as well as levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Zhu Ru by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Zhu Ru by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Zhu Ru has a known interaction with 5 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Zhu Ru contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
There isn't enough safety data on bamboo supplements in pregnancy to know either way. Because this is a concentrated extract, the data on file advises against it during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for your situation.
Is this safe while breastfeeding?
Safety data for bamboo supplements while breastfeeding is unknown. The notes advise avoiding concentrated extracts like this one unless your doctor has cleared it. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Will this prevent cavities?
The evidence we hold on bamboo for dental caries is insufficient — it's not strong enough yet to say whether it works for that purpose.
Are there any side effects from the bamboo itself?
Properly processed bamboo (cooked, fermented, or steam-dried) is safe to eat, but raw shoots contain cyanide compounds. This product should be processed safely. In rare cases, topical contact with bamboo shoots has caused skin irritation. General supplement safety isn't as well studied as food safety.
