Clinical
Dextromethorphan is used to temporarily relieve cough caused by the common cold, the flu, or other conditions. Dextromethorphan will relieve a cough but will not treat the cause of the cough or speed recovery. Dextromethorphan is in a class of medications called antitussives. It works by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing.
Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗This is an over-the-counter liquid product taken by mouth, marketed under FDA's OTC monograph rules for nighttime cough relief. It contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide, a cough suppressant typically used to reduce cough reflex, and doxylamine succinate, a sedating antihistamine commonly used to promote sleep. Together, these ingredients are intended to address cough and sleep difficulty that may occur at night.
