These rows are manufacturer reports to the FDA for Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution — they do not necessarily cover every manufacturer that makes this drug. A company appears here only if it told the FDA it has a supply problem, so other makers may still have stock. That’s the basis for the Where else can I get Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution? options further down this page.

Why is Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution in shortage?

Vantive US Healthcare LLC has made a business decision to permanently stop making all of the DIANEAL peritoneal dialysis solutions they reported to the FDA. This affects every strength and formulation in their lineup — including DIANEAL PD-2 with Dextrose (in the 1.5%, 2.5%, and 4.25% dextrose concentrations) and DIANEAL Low Calcium with Dextrose (also in the 1.5%, 2.5%, and 4.25% dextrose concentrations).

No specific reason beyond "a business decision" was shared publicly by the manufacturer — they didn't give a more detailed explanation. No dates were provided about when remaining supplies might run out. It's also worth knowing that this report covers only Vantive US Healthcare LLC's products, so it reflects their decision alone and not the availability of peritoneal dialysis solutions from any other manufacturers.

Based on the manufacturer-reported reason(s) and notes on file with the FDA for Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution, summarized in plain English by HelloPharmacist. A drug can be short for more than one reason, and the FDA updates these as manufacturers report changes.

What should I do if I take Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution?

Your peritoneal dialysis solution — the DIANEAL PD-2 and DIANEAL Low Calcium with Dextrose products (containing calcium chloride, dextrose, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and sodium lactate) — is currently on the FDA shortage list. I want to walk you through what this means so you can plan with your care team.

All of the listed strengths are reported with no available source right now, including the dextrose concentrations of 1.5 g/100 mL, 2.5 g/100 mL, and 4.25 g/100 mL. The reason given is a business decision to discontinue making these products. Because this is a discontinuation rather than a temporary delay, this supply problem may be permanent, and a conversation with your prescriber is the right next step.

Please keep this in mind:

  • Do not stop, skip, or change your dialysis solution on your own.
  • Ask your pharmacy or dialysis provider to check wholesalers for remaining stock.
  • The same DIANEAL solutions are still listed from Vantive US Healthcare LLC; your pharmacy may be able to source one of these, though it may not be in local stock.
  • Ask your prescriber about a clinician-chosen alternative that fits your dialysis needs.

A manufacturer contact number is listed on this page for reference, though pharmacies usually handle these calls. This is general, national information and may not match your local supply.

See “Where else can I get Calcium Chloride; Dextrose; Magnesium Chloride; Sodium Chloride; Sodium Lactate Intraperitoneal Injection, Solution?” below ↓ The same medicine from manufacturers not reporting a shortage, alternative dosage forms, and therapeutic equivalents with pricing.
If you are a patient:
  • Don’t stop or change the medication on your own — talk to your prescriber first.
  • If this is part of an ongoing or essential regimen (for example HIV treatment or prevention, seizure, heart, transplant, diabetes or mental-health medicines), do not skip or ration doses — contact your pharmacist or prescriber right away to arrange continued supply before you run out.
  • Ask your pharmacy to check other manufacturers, strengths, package sizes, and nearby stores.
  • Ask your prescriber whether a different strength, formulation, or the brand/generic version is appropriate.

How to read the Supply-Risk rating
Low (1–2)Multiple manufacturers still supplying and most strengths or pack sizes sourceable.
Medium (3)Some constraint — fewer suppliers or a notable share of NDCs unavailable.
High (4–5)Down to a single source, most strengths or pack sizes unsourceable, or a long-running outage.
Where does this data come from?
Shortage records come from the FDA Drug Shortages Database API via openFDA (/drug/shortages) — drug, manufacturer & contact, NDC/product, status, availability, reason, therapeutic category and posting/update dates. Current / To Be Discontinued = active; Resolved is kept for history. The Supply-Risk rating is assessed per active ingredient and adds the FDA NDC Directory (still-marketed manufacturers by ingredient & form); same-medicine and equivalent products use First Databank classification + CMS NADAC pricing; Medicaid use + most-affected states come from CMS Medicaid State Drug Utilization Data. Reference only — confirm current status with the manufacturer or FDA before acting on it.
