Some antihypertensive drugs, including beta blockers, diazoxide, hydralazine, and others, appear to inhibit coenzyme Q10 enzyme activity and may decrease endogenous levels of coenzyme Q10. However, it is not clear if this reduction is clinically significant. There is no reliable evidence that coenzyme Q10 depletion contributes to antihypertensive drug side effects.

Coenzyme Q10 is a natural compound your body makes that helps cells produce energy and acts as an antioxidant. Some blood pressure medications, including verapamil, appear to interfere with certain enzymes involved in the body's own CoQ10 production, which could modestly reduce levels over time. That said, the evidence here is really thin, and no one has shown this causes actual problems for people taking these medications. If you are curious or have concerns, it is worth a quick conversation with your pharmacist or doctor.

Dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (DCCBs) might decrease vitamin C absorption.

DCCBs inhibit uptake of vitamin C by intestinal cells in vitro. Whether this causes a clinically significant reduction in vitamin C absorption in humans is not known.

Vitamin C is something your immune system, skin, and wound healing all depend on, so it is worth knowing that verapamil, a calcium channel blocker in this combination, has shown in lab studies an ability to interfere with how intestinal cells take up vitamin C. That said, this has only been seen in lab settings and has not been confirmed to matter in real people, which is why the evidence is currently rated as insufficient. Most patients taking this medication do not need to act on this, but if you have any concerns about your vitamin C levels or diet, it is a good topic to raise with your pharmacist or doctor.
