a) Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol significantly increased in 2 patients taking lovastatin 80 milligrams and oat bran fiber 50 to 100 grams daily for hypercholesterolemia after 4 weeks. When oat bran was discontinued, LDL decreased to baseline levels. Patient A had baseline LDL of 4.3 millimoles/Liter (mmol/L) which increased to 4.95 mmol/L after 4 weeks of concomitant oat bran therapy, then decreased to 4.14 mmol/L four weeks after discontinuation of oat bran. Patient D had baseline LDL of 5.75 mmol/L, which increased to 8.13 mmol/L, then decreased to 5.98 mmol/L 1.
