What happens
Increased risk of digoxin toxicity and reduced digoxin exposure
Interaction Deep Dive
Concomitant use of digoxin with parathyroid hormone may cause digoxin toxicity if hypercalcemia occurs due to transient increases in calcium caused by parathyroid hormone. Monitor serum calcium and digoxin levels and check for signs and symptoms of digitalis toxicity. Dose adjustment of digoxin and parathyroid hormone may be required during concurrent use1 Concomitant use of digoxin and parathyroid hormone may also reduce digoxin exposure. Increase in the dose of digoxin may be required with concomitant use digoxin and parathyroid hormone 2345.
Why it happens (mechanism)
Hypercalcemia-induced alteration of digoxin inotropic effect; unknown
