Losartan Potassium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the gist with agar and your losartan (Cozaar): agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. The thinking is that this gel could trap part of an oral pill and keep a little of it from being absorbed, so slightly less losartan reaches your blood. With losartan, that could mean it works a touch less well, and you might notice your blood pressure creeping up.

I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical and comes mostly from animal feeding studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, which is far more than a typical supplement dose. The food amounts most people use are unlikely to cause trouble. If you take agar as a supplement, a simple fix is to separate it from your losartan by a couple of hours and run it by your pharmacist first.

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
