Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can sometimes wrap around food and pills and slow down how much your body soaks up. With metformin, the worry is that less of your dose gets absorbed, which could mean it doesn't control your blood sugar as well as usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's mostly theoretical, based on animal studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, which is far more than a normal serving. Eating agar in food is unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated agar supplements, just space them a couple of hours from your metformin and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
