Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that African wild potato lowers blood glucose levels. So far, this effect has not been shown in humans. Theoretically, concomitant use of African wild potato and antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the gist for your situation: in animal studies, African Wild Potato seemed to nudge blood sugar downward on its own. Metformin already works to lower your blood sugar, so the worry is simply that the two together could push your levels a little too low. We call that hypoglycemia, and with metformin it's usually mild, but it can still leave you feeling shaky, sweaty, dizzy, headachy, or unusually hungry.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is, though. The blood sugar effect has only shown up in lab and animal research, not in people, so this is more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Metformin is not a prodrug, so this isn't about how your body activates it. If you'd like to try the supplement, keep an eye on your readings and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
