Moxifloxacin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the thinking on taking agar with moxifloxacin (Avelox). Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. When a gel like that is sitting in your stomach and intestines, it can theoretically grab onto a swallowed pill and slow or block how much gets absorbed into your bloodstream. With an antibiotic, that matters because you need enough drug in your system to actually clear the infection. Less absorption could mean a weaker effect.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, based mostly on animal feeding studies, not real patients on moxifloxacin. Still, fluoroquinolones like this one are already fussy about absorption. To be safe, separate the doses by a few hours and check timing with your pharmacist.

About Moxifloxacin

What Is Moxifloxacin Used For?

Brand name: Avelox

Moxifloxacin tablets and intravenous (IV) injection are approved for adults 18 and older to treat bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin infections, complicated abdominal infections, plague, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Note: moxifloxacin should only be used for sinusitis and chronic bronchitis flare-ups when no other antibiotic option is available, due to the risk of serious side effects.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution (eye drops) — including the brand Vigamox — is a separate, topical formulation used only in the eye to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible bacteria. The eye drop form is not used for body-wide infections.
