Sumatriptan falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the gist with sumatriptan and agar. Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. The thinking is that this gel could trap part of an oral medication and slow or reduce how much gets absorbed. If that happened with your oral sumatriptan tablet, you might get less relief from a migraine attack (more lingering throbbing, nausea, or light sensitivity) than you'd expect.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on pharmacology and animal studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, which is far more than a typical food serving. It's rated minor. To be safe, you can simply space agar a couple of hours apart from your dose, and check with your pharmacist if you use agar regularly.

What Is Sumatriptan Used For?

Brand name: Tosymra

Sumatriptan treats acute migraine attacks — with or without aura — in adults. It is available as tablets, nasal spray, nasal capsule, and subcutaneous injection, and is used to stop a migraine once it has started, not to prevent future attacks.

The subcutaneous injection forms — including Imitrex injection, Sumatriptan injection, and Sumatriptan Succinate injection — are also approved to treat acute cluster headache in adults. Zembrace SymTouch (subcutaneous injection) is approved for acute migraine only. Tablets and nasal forms are not established for cluster headache.
