QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS
Why this applies to Sumatriptan
Sumatriptan falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Arsenic interacts with.
Up to 40% of patients treated with prescription arsenic trioxide have a prolonged QT interval on their electrocardiogram (ECG). Theoretically, non-prescription arsenic could have an additive effect when combined with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with sumatriptan (Tosymra) and arsenic. Prescription arsenic trioxide is well known to stretch out the heart's electrical reset time, what doctors call the QT interval. Up to 40% of people on that cancer medicine show this change on an ECG. Sumatriptan itself isn't a classic QT drug, but it does narrow blood vessels (including in the heart) and can cause chest tightness, flushing, and a racing or fluttering feeling, so stacking anything that stresses the heart's rhythm isn't ideal.
The good news: this concern is mostly theoretical for ordinary non-prescription arsenic, and there's no reason to take arsenic on purpose anyway. If you're worried about contaminated products or your heart, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sumatriptan page
“The supplement risk that matters most with sumatriptan (Tosymra) is serotonin overload. This migraine drug works through serotonin receptors, and 20 of the 50 interacting ingredients on file, 5-HTP among them, can push serotonin activity higher still, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, fever).”

About Arsenic
What is Arsenic?
- Homeopathic digestive complaints
- Traditional remedy for inflammatory conditions
- Prescription use in certain leukemias (medical, not supplement)
- Anxiety and restlessness (homeopathic tradition)
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that is toxic in its inorganic form, and it is not a supplement you should take to improve your health. While arsenic trioxide is a real, doctor-prescribed cancer medicine, and tiny homeopathic doses exist, there is no good reason to take arsenic on your own. Avoid arsenic-containing products and talk to a pharmacist or doctor about any concerns.
About Sumatriptan
What Is Sumatriptan Used For?
Brand name: Tosymra
Sumatriptan treats acute migraine attacks — with or without aura — in adults. It is available as tablets, nasal spray, nasal capsule, and subcutaneous injection, and is used to stop a migraine once it has started, not to prevent future attacks.
The subcutaneous injection forms — including Imitrex injection, Sumatriptan injection, and Sumatriptan Succinate injection — are also approved to treat acute cluster headache in adults. Zembrace SymTouch (subcutaneous injection) is approved for acute migraine only. Tablets and nasal forms are not established for cluster headache.
