Desvenlafaxine falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Arsenic interacts with.

Arsenic trioxide can prolong the QT interval.
Up to 40% of patients treated with prescription arsenic trioxide have a prolonged QT interval on their electrocardiogram (ECG). Theoretically, non-prescription arsenic could have an additive effect when combined with drugs that prolong the QT interval.

Here's the concern with this pairing. Arsenic, especially the prescription form arsenic trioxide, can stretch out the heart's electrical cycle on an ECG (called QT prolongation). In studies, up to 40% of people on prescription arsenic showed this change. Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) can also nudge the QT interval a little, so stacking the two could add up and, in rare cases, lead to a dangerous irregular heartbeat.

To be clear, desvenlafaxine works fine on its own and isn't a prodrug, so arsenic doesn't change how strong your antidepressant is. The worry is purely the combined heart-rhythm effect. The good news: you really shouldn't be taking any arsenic product anyway. If you suspect exposure or feel dizzy, faint, or notice a racing heart, please reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.

Brand names: Pristiq, Khedezla

Desvenlafaxine extended-release tablets — sold under brand names including Pristiq, Desvenlafaxine ER, Desvenlafaxine Succinate, and others — are approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

This medication is not approved for use in children or adolescents. Its effectiveness was studied in clinical trials of adult outpatients who met standard diagnostic criteria for MDD.
