Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Agar Overview
Agar is a type of polysaccharide that is extracted from red algae. It is used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceuticals, and other products. In cooking, agar is commonly used to make jellies, puddings, and other desserts. It is also used in scientific laboratories as a solid growth medium for microorganisms (i.e., an agar petri dish). Agar is a vegetarian alternative to gelatin, and is a food rich in certain minerals, vitamins, and dietary fiber.
Tolvaptan Overview

Tolvaptan (Jynarque) is used to slow the worsening of kidney function in certain patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD; a certain type of inherited kidney disease). Tolvaptan (Jynarque) is in a class of medications called vasopressin V2 receptor antagonists. It works by increasing the amount of water released from the body as urine and decreases the growth of cysts in the kidneys. Removing fluid from the body and slowing the growth of cysts helps to slow the worsening of kidney function.

Tolvaptan is also available as a tablet (Samsca) to treat low blood levels of sodium in people who have heart failure or certain other conditions. This monograph only gives information about tolvaptan tablets (Jynarque) to slow the worsening of kidney function in patients with ADPKD.
