Bleomycin falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Alpha-lipoic Acid interacts with.

Theoretically, the antioxidant effects of alpha-lipoic acid might alter the effectiveness of antitumor antibiotics.
The use of antioxidants like alpha-lipoic acid during chemotherapy is controversial. There are concerns that antioxidants could reduce the activity of antitumor antibiotic drugs, which work by generating free radicals. However, some researchers theorize that antioxidants might make chemotherapy more effective by reducing oxidative stress that might interfere with apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. More evidence is needed to determine what effect, if any, antioxidants such as alpha-lipoic acid have on chemotherapy involving antitumor antibiotics. Advise patients to consult their oncologist before using alpha-lipoic acid.

Here is the thinking behind this one. Bleomycin fights cancer in part by creating free radicals that damage and kill tumor cells. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant, and its whole job is to mop up free radicals. So on paper, taking a concentrated ALA supplement during your treatment could blunt how well bleomycin works, which matters when you are counting on every bit of that chemo to do its job.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not proven in real patients. Some researchers even think antioxidants might help. We just do not know yet. Because the stakes are high with cancer treatment, please do not start ALA without first clearing it with your oncologist.

It is most studied for diabetic nerve pain, where some evidence suggests it may help, but evidence for most other uses is limited. What Is Bleomycin Used For?

Brand name: Blenoxane

Bleomycin injection is used as a palliative (disease-managing, not curative) treatment for several cancers. It can be used alone or combined with other chemotherapy drugs to treat squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (including the mouth, tongue, tonsil, larynx, and other sites), as well as squamous cell carcinomas of the penis, cervix, and vulva. It also treats Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and testicular carcinoma (including embryonal cell, choriocarcinoma, and teratocarcinoma subtypes).

When given as an intrapleural injection (directly into the chest cavity), Bleomycin acts as a sclerosing agent — it seals off the space around the lungs to treat malignant pleural effusion and help prevent fluid from coming back.
