Phenelzine Sulfate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group American Ginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, American ginseng can interfere with MAOI therapy.
There is one case report of insomnia, headache, and tremors when an unspecified ginseng product was used with phenelzine (Nardil), an MAOI. There is also one case report of hypomania when an unspecified ginseng product was used with phenelzine. Theoretically, American ginseng may interfere with MAOI therapy.

Here's the honest picture: the worry about combining American ginseng with phenelzine (Nardil) rests on very thin evidence. We're talking about a couple of old case reports where people taking a ginseng product alongside phenelzine had trouble sleeping, headaches, tremors, or felt unusually 'up' and revved (hypomania). It's not clear exactly why, and the ginseng type wasn't even specified.

Since phenelzine is an MAOI that boosts mood-related brain chemicals, the concern is that ginseng could add an over-stimulated effect on top. It's mostly theoretical, so don't panic. But because MAOIs already require real caution, it's smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding ginseng, and to watch for jitteriness, insomnia, or headaches.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
