American ginseng seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, American ginseng might decrease the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs.

Here's the thinking behind this one. Temsirolimus (Torisel) works partly by dampening the kind of cell signaling that lets tumors grow, and it has immune-suppressing effects too. American ginseng, on the other hand, is believed to stimulate the immune system. So in theory, ginseng could pull in the opposite direction and slightly blunt how well your treatment does its job.

I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves in lab and animal studies, not on real cases in people taking temsirolimus. Still, when you're being treated for kidney cancer, I'd rather not add an unknown. Please don't start ginseng without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist, who know your full plan.
