Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Ilumya (tildrakizumab) works by quieting down part of your immune system to calm the inflammation that drives plaque psoriasis. Blue-green algae, on the other hand, have been shown in lab studies to stimulate immune activity, so in theory they could push in the opposite direction and blunt how well your psoriasis treatment works, possibly meaning more flare-ups or scaly patches than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based only on lab and animal data, not real-world cases with this drug. So don't panic. Still, since algae products can also be contaminated, it's worth running it by your pharmacist or dermatologist before you add it. Please don't stop your Ilumya on your own.

Blue-green algae are nutrient-rich aquatic microorganisms (such as spirulina and Klamath Lake algae) taken as a supplement for energy, nutrition, and general wellness.
