Chinese prickly ash might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, combining Chinese prickly ash with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding; avoid concomitant use. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the gist: Fondaparinux (Arixtra) is an injectable blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to clot by blocking a clotting protein called factor Xa. Chinese Prickly Ash, the Sichuan pepper used in cooking, may slightly slow down how your platelets stick together. Stack those two effects and you could, in theory, raise your risk of bleeding or bruising more easily.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so it's more theoretical than proven. The sprinkle you'd use to season food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated extracts or capsules are a different story. Since fondaparinux is already a strong anticoagulant, just run any prickly ash supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

Chinese Prickly Ash is the fruit husk of Zanthoxylum bungeanum, best known as the Sichuan pepper that creates a tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue. It is widely used in cooking and traditional Chinese medicine for digestive complaints and pain, but strong human evidence for medicinal benefits is limited. Use culinary amounts safely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts.

About Fondaparinux Injection

What Is Fondaparinux Injection Used For?

Brand name: Arixtra

Fondaparinux sodium injection is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — blood clots in the legs — in adults having hip fracture surgery, hip replacement surgery, knee replacement surgery, or abdominal surgery. For hip fracture patients, an extended course of prevention is also recommended after the initial treatment period.

It is also used to treat acute DVT and acute pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, given alongside warfarin. In children aged 1 year and older who weigh at least 10 kg, fondaparinux sodium injection is approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins).
