Mupirocin ointment is approved to treat impetigo — a common contagious skin infection — caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes.

Mupirocin cream (including the brand Pirnuo) is approved for secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions — meaning minor cuts, scrapes, or wounds that have become infected — up to a certain size, caused by those same bacteria.
