Drug & supplement interaction

Cranberry + Sarilumab

Sarilumab brand name: Kevzara.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Cranberry and Sarilumab in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Cranberry and Sarilumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sarilumab and Cranberry in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Sarilumab

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Sarilumab is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inducers, immunosuppressants. Cranberry has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — the most serious being atorvastatin (lipitor) (moderate), cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates (moderate) and nifedipine (procardia) (moderate) — and none of Sarilumab’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Cranberry and Sarilumab May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Reported for Cranberry but not commonly for Sarilumab: stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea and passing urine more often.

Effects for Sarilumab come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Cranberry come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 24,738 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Sarilumab that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sarilumab page

“Sarilumab (Kevzara) works by quieting an overactive immune system in rheumatoid arthritis, and most of the supplements on this page push the other way. Immune stimulants such as ashwagandha, astragalus, and American ginseng could in theory blunt the drug's benefit and let joint symptoms creep back.”

About Cranberry

What is Cranberry?

Cranberry
  • Urinary tract infection prevention
  • Bladder health
  • Antioxidant support
  • Source of vitamin C

Cranberry is best known for helping to prevent repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in some people, and the evidence here is moderate but mixed. It is not a reliable treatment for an active UTI, which usually needs antibiotics. For most people cranberry products are well tolerated, but check with a pharmacist before relying on them, especially if you have frequent infections.

Vaccinium macrocarpon · Ericaceae · Fruit (berry) and fruit juice · Capsules, tablets, softgels, powder, juice, dried berries, liquid extract

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cranberry is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cranberry record says about it on its own.

Cranberry: dosing

There is no single standardized dose of cranberry that is proven best. Studies have used a wide range of juices, powders, and extracts, and products differ a lot in how much active proanthocyanidin they contain.Because of this, the most practical advice is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them. Choose unsweetened options if you are watching sugar intake.

About Sarilumab Injection

What Is Sarilumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Kevzara

Kevzara (sarilumab) injection is approved for three conditions. In adults, it treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when at least one other disease-modifying drug hasn't worked well enough or caused intolerance. It also treats polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in adults who haven't responded adequately to corticosteroids or who can't tolerate tapering them.

Kevzara is also approved for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) — a form of childhood arthritis — but only in patients who weigh 63 kg (about 139 lbs) or more. It is not approved for pediatric patients below that weight due to the lack of an appropriate dosage form.

How was the Cranberry and Sarilumab combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Sarilumab is filed under 2 classifications, and Cranberry has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — none of Sarilumab's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Cranberry interact with any other medications?
Yes. Cranberry has 712 documented drug interactions in our database — Sarilumab is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
