Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cypress interacts with.

In vitro evidence shows that cypress cone extract inhibits blood coagulation in a concentration-dependent manner. In one case report, prolonged bleeding time during surgery occurred in a 52-year-old female undergoing removal of a premalignant skin lesion. Based on preoperative questioning, the patient had no relevant history of systemic disease, drug use, or allergy. Upon postoperative questioning, the patient reported taking cypress cone extract for one year prior to surgery. Theoretically, taking cypress extract along with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding in some patients. Some anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs include aspirin; clopidogrel (Plavix); nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), and naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others); dalteparin (Fragmin); enoxaparin (Lovenox); heparin; warfarin (Coumadin); and others.

Here's the gist: defibrotide (Defitelio) is a clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital for a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. Cypress, especially the cone extract some people take as a supplement, has shown in lab studies and one surgical case report that it may slow blood clotting on its own. Stacking these two together could, in theory, tip you toward more bruising and bleeding.

I want to be honest that this evidence is thin and mostly anecdotal, and defibrotide is something you only receive under close medical supervision. Still, with any blood thinner, even small added effects matter. Please tell your transplant team and pharmacist about any cypress supplement before treatment so they can watch you carefully.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
