Deutetrabenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Animal research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP2D6. Additionally, an in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP2D6 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Austedo (deutetrabenazine). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medicine down. Lab and animal studies hint that Fo-ti may slow that enzyme, especially the raw, less-processed root. If that happens, deutetrabenazine could build up a bit higher than expected, which may mean stronger or more frequent side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low mood, restlessness, or feeling off balance.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical. It has only been seen in test tubes and animals, not in people, so we can't say how strong it is in real life. Since deutetrabenazine already has dosing tied to CYP2D6, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with Fo-ti rather than guessing.

Deutetrabenazine (brand names Austedo XR and Austedo) is approved for adults to treat two conditions: chorea associated with Huntington's disease (the involuntary, jerky movements caused by Huntington's) and tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled, repetitive movements that often develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric medications).

Both Austedo XR (extended-release tablet) and Austedo (tablet) are approved for these same uses in adults. The two products differ in their dosing schedule and how they are taken, but both target the same conditions.
