Why this applies to Temazepam

Temazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP3A4. One in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP3A4 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this evidence conflicts with animal research suggesting that fo-ti does not inhibit CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Temazepam (Restoril). Your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this sleep medicine. In lab dishes, fo-ti has shown some ability to slow that enzyme down. If that were to happen in a person, temazepam could linger longer and hit harder, meaning more next-morning grogginess, dizziness, unsteadiness, or trouble fully waking up.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, and the animal studies didn't agree. It has never actually been reported in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since both can make you drowsy, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

This medication is intended for short periods only. If sleep trouble doesn't improve within 7 to 10 days, that may signal an underlying medical or psychiatric condition that needs its own evaluation.
