Fucus Vesiculosus + Vincristine Sulfate
Vincristine Sulfate brand name: Marqibo Kit.
Fucus Vesiculosus has a minor interaction with Vincristine Sulfate. Theoretically, concomitant use of Fucus vesiculosus with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Vincristine Sulfate
Vincristine Sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fucus Vesiculosus interacts with.
In vitro research shows that fucoidan, a constituent of Fucus vesiculosus, inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basics on this pairing. Your body clears vincristine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies (test tube only, not in actual people), a compound in bladderwrack called fucoidan appears to slow that enzyme down. If that were to happen in the body, vincristine could clear a little slower and build up, which in theory could mean stronger side effects.
With vincristine, the side effects to watch include tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, constipation, muscle weakness, and low blood counts. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and has never been reported in real patients. Still, because vincristine is a serious chemotherapy drug, please run any bladderwrack use by your oncology team before starting it.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Vincristine Sulfate page
“Chemotherapy leaves little room for error, and vincristine sulfate (Marqibo) is no exception. Nearly everything on this list changes how the body handles the drug through a pathway called CYP3A4, so a supplement can either push vincristine levels high enough to worsen its nerve toxicity or drop them low enough to blunt the cancer treat…”

About Fucus Vesiculosus
What is Fucus Vesiculosus?
- Thyroid support
- Iodine source
- Weight management
- Joint and skin care (topical)
- Constipation and digestive support
Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack) is a brown seaweed rich in iodine that has been used traditionally for thyroid concerns, weight, and skin. There is little solid human evidence to support most of these uses, and its high and variable iodine content can actually harm the thyroid. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a thyroid condition.
