Why this applies to Trimipramine

Trimipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Fucus Vesiculosus interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of Fucus vesiculosus with CYP2C9 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that fucoidan, a constituent of Fucus vesiculosus, inhibits CYP2C9. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with bladderwrack and your trimipramine. One compound in this seaweed, called fucoidan, was shown in a lab dish to slow down a liver enzyme (CYP2C9) that helps clear certain medicines. Trimipramine isn't a prodrug, so if that enzyme were blocked, the drug could linger a little longer and theoretically nudge up its usual side effects, things like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, or feeling lightheaded when you stand.

The big caveat: this has only been seen in a test tube, never in real people, and it's rated as a minor, possible interaction. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, because bladderwrack is also iodine-heavy and can affect your thyroid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
