Ospemifene falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Fucus Vesiculosus interacts with.
Fucus vesiculosus contains high concentrations of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking Fucus vesiculosus while using thyroid hormone could alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something worth clearing up. The interaction on file is really about thyroid hormone medications (like levothyroxine), because bladderwrack's high iodine content can nudge your thyroid in either direction. Ospemifene (Osphena) isn't a thyroid medicine at all. It's an estrogen-like drug used to ease vaginal dryness and painful intercourse after menopause.
So this particular iodine-and-thyroid concern doesn't really apply to Osphena, and the evidence behind it is theoretical to begin with. That said, bladderwrack is still hard on the thyroid for many people, and Osphena carries its own cautions (like blood clot and stroke risk). I'd skip relying on bladderwrack and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any new supplement alongside Osphena.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

In vitro research shows that fucoidan, a constituent of Fucus vesiculosus, inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Osphena (ospemifene). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down. Lab studies suggest that fucoidan, a compound in bladderwrack, may slow that enzyme a bit. In theory, that could let ospemifene build up slightly, which might nudge up its effects or side effects like hot flashes, vaginal discharge, muscle spasms, or sweating. Ospemifene works as-is (it's not a prodrug that needs activating), so a CYP3A4 blocker would tend to increase its levels, not weaken it.
That said, this is only theoretical and has never been reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, given bladderwrack's iodine and thyroid concerns, run it by your pharmacist before combining them.

Osphena (ospemifene) is used to treat two specific symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy — the thinning and drying of vaginal tissues that can happen after menopause. The first is moderate to severe dyspareunia (painful intercourse), and the second is moderate to severe vaginal dryness.
Both of these uses are for postmenopausal women only. Osphena is not used in children or in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
