Here's the simple version. Peri-Colace combines a stimulant laxative (casanthranol) with a stool softener (docusate). Gardenia fruit contains a compound called geniposide that, at least in animal studies, seems to act like a mild laxative on its own. So if you pair the two, you may be stacking two things that push the bowels in the same direction.

What that could feel like in real life is more cramping, looser stools, or even diarrhea, and over time that can leave you a bit dehydrated or low on potassium. I want to be honest though: this is based on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. If you'd like to use gardenia while taking Peri-Colace, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
