Why this applies to Baloxavir Marboxil

Baloxavir Marboxil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach. That gel can wrap around a pill and slow or reduce how much of it your body actually soaks up. With Xofluza (baloxavir), the worry is that you'd absorb less of the medicine, which could make it work less well against the flu. Since baloxavir is usually a single one-time dose taken early in your illness, getting the full amount really matters.

This concern is mostly theoretical for baloxavir specifically, based on fiber's general effect on other oral drugs rather than direct testing. To stay safe, a good habit is to take your baloxavir dose first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any glucomannan. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor about timing.

Brand name: Xofluzanda

Xofluza is used to treat acute uncomplicated influenza (flu) in people 5 years of age and older who have had symptoms for no more than 48 hours — whether they are otherwise healthy or at high risk of developing flu-related complications.

Xofluza is also used for post-exposure prophylaxis (preventing flu after exposure) in people 5 years and older who have been in close contact with someone who has influenza.
