Why this applies to Salbutamol Sulfate

Salbutamol Sulfate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you ever take salbutamol in a tablet or syrup form (oral albuterol) alongside glucomannan. This fiber swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut, and that gel can grab onto medicines and slow down how much actually gets absorbed. So in theory, your oral salbutamol could end up working a little weaker, meaning less relief from wheezing or chest tightness.

The good news is the fix is simple and the evidence here is fairly modest. To stay safe, take your salbutamol first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Note this really only matters for the oral form. If you use a Ventolin inhaler, the medicine goes straight to your lungs and this fiber won't touch it. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. What Is Albuterol Used For?

Brand names: Ventolin, Salvent, Salmol, Airomir, Asmasal Clickhaler, Salamol Easi-Breathe, Ventmax SR, Volmax, Ventolin Syrup, Ventolin Injection, Ventolin Evohaler, Ventolin Accuhaler, Ventolin Nebules, Ventolin Respirator Solution, Salapin, Salamol, Easyhaler Salbutamol, Pulvinal Salbutamol, Salbutamol Cyclocaps, Salamol Steri-Neb

Albuterol is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm — sudden tightening of the airways — in adults and children with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma. Most inhaled formulations (HFA inhalers, dry-powder inhalers, and nebulizer solutions) are approved for patients 4 years and older, though some nebulizer solutions are approved for children as young as 2, and the oral syrup covers adults and children 2 and older. Albuterol tablets are approved for adults and children 6 and older.

Albuterol inhaled products are also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in patients 4 years and older. The inhaled aerosol solution (0.5%) is approved specifically for relief of bronchospasm and acute attacks in patients 12 and older. Not every formulation covers every use — follow the instructions for the specific product you have been prescribed.
