Clopidogrel falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it's sitting in your stomach at the same time as a pill, it can physically grab some of that medicine and keep your body from absorbing all of it. With clopidogrel (Plavix), the worry is that you'd take in less of the dose. Since clopidogrel is the medicine that keeps your platelets from clumping and forming clots, getting less of it could mean weaker protection against a heart attack, stroke, or stent clotting.

The good news is this is mostly a timing issue, and the evidence here is modest (small human and animal studies). A practical fix is to take your clopidogrel first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before adding the fiber, since Plavix is a medicine where consistent protection really matters.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
