Why this applies to Dinoprostone

Dinoprostone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's something worth knowing about this particular pairing. The concern with glucomannan and oral medications is that this fiber swells into a thick gel in your stomach, which can slow or block how well a swallowed drug gets absorbed. The thing is, dinoprostone (Prepidil) isn't really an oral medication in the usual sense. It's given as a gel or insert placed at the cervix by your healthcare team in a hospital or clinic setting to help prepare for labor.

Because dinoprostone works locally where it's placed and isn't a pill you swallow at home, this stomach-gel interaction doesn't truly apply here. This is a medicine your care team controls during a closely monitored time, so glucomannan you take by mouth shouldn't interfere with it. Still, always tell your doctor or pharmacist about any supplements you use.

Dinoprostone is used to ripen (soften and open) an unripe cervix in pregnant women who are at or near term and need labor to be induced for medical or obstetric reasons.

Cervidil (vaginal insert) is indicated for initiating or continuing cervical ripening in pregnant women at or near term who have a medical or obstetrical reason for labor induction. Prepidil (vaginal gel) is indicated for ripening an unfavorable cervix in pregnant women at or near term who have a medical or obstetrical need for labor induction.
