Why this applies to Goserelin

Goserelin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's some good news that should ease your mind. This interaction is really about glucomannan's thick, gel-like fiber slowing down how well swallowed pills get absorbed in your gut. Goserelin (Zoladex) doesn't fit that picture. It isn't a pill you swallow. It's a small implant placed under the skin of your belly by a healthcare provider, so it skips your stomach and intestines entirely.

Because Goserelin never travels through your digestive tract, that fiber gel has nothing to grab onto or block. So glucomannan should not change how Goserelin works or its effects, like hot flashes or lowered hormone levels. Still, it never hurts to mention any supplement you take to your pharmacist or doctor, just so your whole list is on record.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. What Is Goserelin Implant Used For?

Brand name: Zoladex

  • Goserelin implant is used in combination with radiation therapy and other medications to treat localized prostate cancer and is used alone to treat the symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer. It is also used to treat advanced breast cancer in certain women. It is also used to manage endometriosis (a condition in which the type of tissue that lines the uterus [womb] grows in other areas of the body and causes pain, heavy or irregular menstruation [periods], and other symptoms) and to help with the treatment of abnormal bleeding of the uterus. Goserelin implant is in a class of medications called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of certain hormones in the body.
