Why this applies to Osimertinib Mesylate

Osimertinib Mesylate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with glucomannan and your Tagrisso (osimertinib). Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can physically trap pills and slow or reduce how much of them your body actually absorbs. So the worry here isn't a liver enzyme issue, it's a simpler one: the fiber may keep some of your osimertinib from getting into your bloodstream.

With a cancer medicine like this, getting your full dose matters, since lower blood levels could mean less of the tumor-fighting effect you're counting on. The good news is this is mostly theoretical for osimertinib and easy to manage by spacing them out. A common tip is to take glucomannan about 30 to 60 minutes after your medicine, but please run the timing by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

About Osimertinib

What Is Osimertinib Used For?

Brand name: Tagrisso

Tagrisso is used to treat adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors have specific EGFR mutations — either an exon 19 deletion or an exon 21 L858R mutation — confirmed by an FDA-approved test. It is used in several settings: after surgery to reduce the risk of cancer returning (adjuvant therapy), for locally advanced stage III NSCLC that has not progressed after chemoradiation, and as a first-line treatment for locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC (including in combination with pemetrexed and platinum-based chemotherapy).

Tagrisso is also approved for adults with metastatic NSCLC that carries a specific resistance mutation called T790M, when the cancer has stopped responding to another EGFR-targeted therapy.
