Why this applies to Sunitinib

Sunitinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the gist with Sunitinib (Sutent): glucomannan is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can physically wrap around medicines and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs from a pill. The concern here is that taking them together could lower the amount of sunitinib that actually gets into your bloodstream, which might mean less of the cancer-fighting effect you're counting on.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on small or animal studies with other drugs, not sunitinib itself. But because sunitinib is such an important medicine, I'd play it safe. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your sunitinib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the glucomannan. Please run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before adding any fiber supplement.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. What Is Sunitinib Used For?

Brand name: Sutent

Sunitinib malate capsules and Sutent capsules are both approved to treat adult patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) after the cancer has progressed on or could not be tolerated with imatinib mesylate. Both are also used for advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) and as adjuvant (preventive) treatment after surgery for adults at high risk of kidney cancer coming back. Additionally, both treat progressive, well-differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNET) that cannot be surgically removed or have spread.
